FAQ

General

Who is behind this initiative?
Postcards for Iran is a project by Mideast Youth, an independent all-volunteer network that promotes dialogue and understanding within the Middle East and North Africa. You can read more about us here.

Why was Postcards for Iran launched?
International pressure has been instrumental in causing governments to reverse repressive laws or release dissidents and human rights defenders. Various reports have also indicated that prisoners receiving mail were treated better as the authorities were aware that the world was monitoring their situation.

Feeling that government action and media coverage on the worsening situation in Iran has been insufficient, we decided to launch a campaign that would draw attention to the violations and lead to action against them.

Why create a public record?
We realize that some, if not many, of the postcards will not reach their intended recipients due to interception by the government. The public record would serve as a testimony to the cards that have been sent

Sending a postcard

Why are only two options for recipients available?
We believe we can achieve a greater impact by concentrating our efforts on two key destinations. We carefully reviewed all possible options before narrowing our list down to two. If you wish to send a postcard to an unlisted destination, you can go down the “traditional” route and send a postcard using regular mail.

Will my personal information be included in the postcard?
Yes, as including your name and country in your postcard would make it more genuine (your email will never be disclosed). Although we discourage anonymity, we understand that some may feel compelled to make that choice. Participants who opt to remain anonymous will have their names withheld

How can I know when my postcard has been sent?
Once your postcard has been sent, we’ll send you a notification via email.

Do you review postcards before sending them?
We believe in maintaining a respectful discourse with the Iranian government. A single inappropriate postcard could damage the integrity of our entire campaign and cast doubts over its intentions. While we trust all participants will maintain respect, we will monitor all submissions for racist, inciting and hateful messages.

I’ve sent a postcard; now what?
Spread the word! Inform your family, friends and colleagues about the campaign and encourage them to get involved. Also consider making a small donation to assist us in covering the fees of sending postcards.

Donations

Why do you need donations?
“Postcards for Iran” is a volunteer-led effort, spearheaded by Mideast Youth - a registered non-profit organization. Your donations will assist us in keeping the project alive and enabling that the greatest number of individuals to take part and send a postcard.
